Crisis in Long Term Care

The pandemic currently gripping Ontario has exposed the precarious conditions for senior resident who live in long-term care (LTC) homes in Ontario. Almost fifty percent of the deaths from the COVID-19 have been seniors who live in these homes. Out of a total of 626 long-term care homes in Ontario, there have been outbreaks (defined as two or more reported cases) in 114 and this number grows every day. Over 500 residents in these homes have tested positive for the corona virus, as have over 350 staff, one of whom has died. Several compounding factors have contributed to this crisis, but the root cause has everything to do with capitalism’s drive towards commodification and exploitation.

Fight for publicly-owned medical manufacturing in Ontario

The Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) demands immediate action to supply all health care workers with the necessary protective equipment in order to protect themselves and all people in Ontario. 

Nurses, personal support workers, cleaners, doctors and other health care workers are all putting themselves in harm’s way to save lives. They require respirator masks (like the N95 mask), face shields and gowns necessary to ensure they are safe from COVID-19 which also means that their families, their communities and their patients are safe.

Cancel Rent! Housing for people, not for profit

The Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) calls on the Ontario Government to immediately cancel rent payments for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The emerging health and economic crises are compounding the already dire housing emergency in Ontario. It is long overdue that the right to housing was recognized by the actions of governments. The Communist Party stands in solidarity with tenants and tenants’ rights organizations calling to cancel rents and organizing rent strikes on April 1st and beyond.

We have only seen one third of the four-year term of the Conservative majority government, and already it has managed to drastically accelerate the pace and expand the scope of the corporate attack in the province.
