As the Ontario Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Canada meets, Ontario, Canada and the capitalist world is still in the midst of a severe and worsening health crisis. The pandemic is compounded with other aspects of the overall capitalist crisis: economic, ecological and devastation through imperialist war and sanctions.
(more…)The coronavirus pandemic has caused a series of crises in Ontario. One of them is the dramatic impact it has had in the housing sector. Homeless people have been exposed to the virus in overcrowded shelters. Encampments have grown exponentially as a result. Cities across the province have already or are threatening to bulldoze the encampments. The unemployment rate in Ontario has doubled since the pandemic began. After CERB finished and the emergency freeze on evictions was lifted in August, thousands of tenants were not able to keep up with their rent and have been evicted or are in the process of being evicted. These evictions are disproportionately low-income and racialized tenants.
(more…)The Ontario Committee of the Communist Party of Canada demands immediate action by the Trudeau and Ford governments to uphold the treaty rights and human rights of Indigneous peoples. Continued inaction will lead to the further theft of Indigenous land, further suffering and displacement and write another shameful chapter in Canada’s ongoing genocidal history.
(more…)The Ontario Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Canada condemns the recent announcements from the Doug Ford government, allowing for more private degree-granting institutions and moving forward with “performance-based” funding. These changes are part of an accelerating effort to expand corporate involvement and influence in post-secondary education (PSE) and deny hundreds of thousands of people of their right to an education.
