Jobs, housing and services, not Ford’s ‘jail not bail’ agenda!

The Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) condemns the recent announcement from the Ford government on making Ontario a cash bail province. The move to cash bail is a further escalation of Ford’s so-called “Protect Ontario” campaign – a cynical rebrand of the pro-corporate and anti-democratic war his government has waged since it was elected in 2018. 

Cash bail systems are notorious for discriminating against lower income people, who don’t have the money to pay so end up languishing in jails. Ford’s announcement is already the subject of a court challenge by the Civil Liberties Association of Canada and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, who argue that it violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and oversteps provincial jurisdiction.

Defend democratic rights: Stop the bubble-zone by-law

The Toronto Committee of the Communist Party of Canada reaffirms its condemnation of restrictive, anti-worker, and anti-democratic legislation being considered by Toronto City Council. To protect the gains won by labour and progressive movements, we call on Council to reject any measures which seek to restrict the democratic rights of the working class, and we urge all in the labour and people’s movements to fight and reject any restrictions.

End the repression of Indigenous land and water defenders!

The Ontario Convention of the Communist Party of Canada condemns the recent arrests of land defenders on Wet’suwet’en territories. We stand in full solidarity in the fight for the rights of land and water defenders whether it be on Wet’suwet’en territory, Haudenosaunee territory at the 1492 Land Back reclamation or anywhere around the world where Indigenous peoples are struggling against capitalist dispossession.
