Stelco Layoffs Stark Reminder of Need to Nationalize Steel, Auto, & Energy

The Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) condemns the recent September 28th Stelco announcement that it would be indefinitely laying off 350 employees at its cold-rolled and coated steel operations at its Hamilton Works plant starting in October, and laying off a further 50+ workers at its pickling operation at its Lake Erie works plant. We stand in solidarity with USW 1005 and 8782 who are fighting the layoffs to protect jobs and domestic production.

Jobs, housing and services, not Ford’s ‘jail not bail’ agenda!

The Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) condemns the recent announcement from the Ford government on making Ontario a cash bail province. The move to cash bail is a further escalation of Ford’s so-called “Protect Ontario” campaign – a cynical rebrand of the pro-corporate and anti-democratic war his government has waged since it was elected in 2018. 

Cash bail systems are notorious for discriminating against lower income people, who don’t have the money to pay so end up languishing in jails. Ford’s announcement is already the subject of a court challenge by the Civil Liberties Association of Canada and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, who argue that it violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and oversteps provincial jurisdiction.

Solidarity with USW 7135 Workers on Strike at National Steel Car

All workers deserve fair wages, good pensions and a safe work environment!

The Communist Party’s Ontario Executive Committee stands in solidarity with 1,200 workers at National Steel Car (NSC) in Hamilton, members of USW Local 7135, who have been on strike since August 12.

National Steel Car, Canada’s largest manufacturer of rail cars, has a notorious history of workplace accidents, many of them very serious. Ahead of the union’s 41-day strike in 2023, the company had three workplace deaths over a 21-month period.

  1. Since our last meeting, the political situation for the working class in Ontario has continued to intensify. The growing capitalist crisis of over-accumulation has led the most aggressive imperialist forces to abandon even the pretense of multilateralism. U.S. imperialism in particular is becoming much more aggressive in its use of tariffs, sanctions, and now, openly, military force to carve up the world.
